AS 1628:1999 pdf – Water supply- -Metallic gate, globe and non-return valves.
3.1 SCOPE OF SECTION
This Section specifies the requirements for the design and manufacture of valves.
3.2 END CONNECTORS
3.2.1 Union-end connectors
Union-end connectors shall comply with AS 3688.
3.2.2 Compression ends
Ends for connections to copper tubes by compression joint shall comply with the relevant
requirements of AS 3688, as applicable.
3.2.3 Capillary ends
Ends for connection to copper tubes by capillary joint shall comply with the relevant requirements of AS 3688, as applicable.
3.2.4 Flanged ends
Flanged end dimensions and drillings shall comply with AS 2129 or AS 4087.
3.2.5 Screwed ends
Internally screwed ends shall comply with AS 1722.1 Series RP.
3.3 INTERCHANGEABILITY OF PARTS
All valve parts shall be interchangeable between units of the same size and model from any one manufacturer.
3.4 SCREW THREADS (for factory-assembled components)
3.4.1 General
Threads of factory-assembled components may be right-hand or left- hand and shall comply with this Clause (3.4).
3.4.2 Fastening pipe threads
Fastening pipe threads shall comply with AS 1722.2. Internal threads shall be Series 0.
External threads shall be Series GA or Series GB, unless otherwise specified in this
Standard.
3.4.3 Other screw threads
Other screw threads shall comply with a recognized Standard for threaded form and shall be marked accordingly.
3.4.4 Thread engagement
3.4.4.1 Other screw threads
The minimum number of threads engaged for other screw threads shall comply with
AS 3688.
3.4.4.2 Threaded ends
The design of internally threaded parts shall make allowance for accommodating external pipe threads up to the maximum lengths of useful thread given in Column 2 of Table 3.1.
5.4 GATES
5.4.1 General
Gates including stem in the fully raised position shall provide a clear bore through the valve.
5.4.2 Guides
Gate valves shall be provided with guides to ensure that the seating surfaces of the wedge does not touch the body seat surfaces until near the point of closure.
5.4.3 Wedge-type valves
The wedges for wedge-type valves, both solid and split types, shall be provided with guides to ensure the proper operation of the valve. When the valve is closed, the wedge shall ride high on the body seats to allow for wear. Wedges shall be provided with a means of attachment to the stem; such attachment shall be suitable for the type of stem used.
5.5 STEMS
5.5.1 General
Stems shall be formed in one piece.
5.5.2 Types of stem
Stems shall be of one of the following types:
(a) Inside-screw type—having the actuating screw thread within the bonnet.
(b) OuLide-screw type—having the actuating screw thread exterior to the bonnet.
5.6 BONNETS
5.6.1 General
The surfaces forming the bonnet-to-body joint may be machined. The joint may be metal- to-metal or made with a gasket. Bonnet-to-body connections may be of the screwed, union or bolted types.
5.6.2 Flange bolting
Bolting of bonnet-to-body flanges shall be so designed as to withstand the maximum
pressure, temperature and mechanical stresses encountered in the operation of the valve.
5.7 GLANDS
5.7.1 General
Glands shall be either screwed or bolted. All glands shall incorporate a gland follower. Bolted glands shall be of the solid or two-piece self-aligning type.
5.7.2 PackIng
Packing shall be graphite impregnated or similar or ‘0’ rings.
