2.7 NEAR DOOR OPENINGS
If a ladder is to he placed near a doorway, the door should he blocked open, locked closed or removed. Alternatively, a person may he placed on guard at the foot of the ladder. In addition guarding. appropriate warning signs may he placed or erected.
2.8 CLIMBING LADDERS
When ascending or descending a ladder, a person should face the ladder and have both hands free to grip the ladder. The use of a tool pouch, or similar, should he considered when carrying tools. It is recommended that a person have three limbs in contact with the ladder at all times. i.e. both arms and one leg. or both legs and one arm. The user should not climb from one ladder to another.
2.9 WORKING ON LADDERS
When working on a ladder the user should remain centred between the stiles. The user should not stand higher than the tread or rung indicated on the ladder as the highest standing level. The user should not stand on—
(a) the top cap or the top tread of a self-supporting ladder:
(h) above the second top rung of a non-self-supporting ladder; or
(c) the rear horitontal braces of a single-sided self-supporting ladder.
The ladder should be kept close to the work. The user should not overreach, but instead should descend and relocate the ladder. A ladder should not be relocated while anyone is on the ladder. When using a ladder the user should never push or pull unless the ladder is properly secured.
When a self-supporting ladder is to he relocated tools should be removed from the top cap before moving the ladder.
Users should not ‘walk’ the ladder to reposition it hut instead should descend and relocate the ladder. ‘Walking describes the action of a person at the wp of a ladder who, by moving their body, causes the bottoms of the ladder stiles to lift clear of the floor so causing the ladder to move.
2.10 MOVEMENT ON LAI)I)ERS
2.10.1 Number of persons on a ladder
Only one person should be on a ladder at a time. However, emergency conditions may necessitate a second person being on a ladder. In these circumstances, only one person should move at a time and a non-self-supporting ladder should be inclined to a steeper angle than that recommended in Clause 2.3. The ladder should be lashed in position.
2.10.2 Number of ladders
If frequency of traffic or other circumstances warrant, separate ladders should be provided for ascent and descent.
