5.1.3 Upper Deviation. This is the algebraic difference between the maximum limit of size and the basic size. it is designated by the French term écarl supericur (ES for holes and es for shafts).
5.1.4 Lower Deviation. This is the algebraic difference between the minimum limit of size and the basic size. It is designated by the French term écarf infericur (El for holes and ci for shafts).
5.1.5 Fundamental Deviations (Allowances). These are the deviations that are closest to the basic size. In Fig. 4 they would be El and es. Fundamental deviations are designated by alphabetical letters. See para. 5.3.
5.1.6 Fits. Fits are determined by the fundamental deviation, which may be positive or negative, assigned to the mating parts. The selected fits can be clearance, transition, and interference. To illustrate fits schematicafly, a zero line is drawn to represent the basic size. By convention, the shaft always lies below the zero line and the hole lies above the zero line (except for interference fits). This makes the fundamental deviationnegative for the shaft and equal to its upper deviation(es). The fundamental deviation is positive for the holeand equal to its lower deviation (En. See Fig. 4.
5.1.7 Tolerance. Defined by a series of numericalgrades, each grade provides numerical values for nomi-nal sizes corresponding to the standard tolerance. Seepara.5.2.When the tolerance is applied to the schematicdiagram, the tolerance for the part (shaft) continues tobe negative. Thus, the tolerance plus the fit define thelower deviation (ei). The tolerance for the mating part(hole) continues to be positive. Thus, the tolerance plusthe fit define the upper deviation (ES). A schematicexample of the metric tolerance system as applied tometric screw threads is shown in Fig. 4.
5.2 Tolerance Grade
(a)This is indicated by a number. The system pro-vides for a series of tolerance grades for each of thefour screw thread parameters (D:,d,D,dz). Thetolerance grades for this Standard were selected fromthose given in So 965-1.
(b) The underlined tolerance grades are used withnormal length of thread engagement.
