1 Scope and object
This International Standard applies to coaxial connectors for electrical instruments used in nuclear laboratories. While particularly useful in such applications, the connectors included in this standard are also useful in other applications. However, this standard does not necessarily apply to nuclear power installations where special requirements may necessitate the use of other connectors, some of which (e.g. types N and TNC) are described in various parts of IEC 60169.

3 Recommended connectors
To comply with this standard, nuclear laboratory instruments shall use the connectors listed below for nuclear signal applications.
3.1 Connectors for peak voltages not exceeding 500 V
For applications in nuclear laboratory instruments, the following connectors should be used for peak voltages not exceeding 500 V:
a) type BNC as defined in IEC 60169-8;
b) type 50CM as defined in IEC 60729;
c) type SMB as defined in IEC 60169-10.
3.2 High-voltage connector
For applications up to 5 kV, type B connectors, as defined in IEC 60498, should be used.
These connectors are often termed type SHV connectors (Safe High Voltage). See also 4.3.
4 Descriptions
4.1 BNC connector
The BNC connector (3.1a)) is a medium size connector that has been in use for a long period of time and continues to be used in a wide variety of applications and disciplines.
4.2 50CM and SMB connectors
The type 50CM (3.1b)) (commonly referred to as the LEMO connector) is a miniature connector with a positive securing mechanism while the type SMB (3.1c)) is a subminiature snap-on connector. As technology advanced, particularly with the advent of solid-state circuitry, instrument panel space became both scarce and crowded while the number of input and output connectors continued to increase. Thus, the miniature type 50CM connector (3.1b)) and the subminiature type SMB connector (3.1c)) came into common use on NIM (see [1] 1 ), CAMAC (see IEC 60729 and [2]) and Fastbus (see [3]) instruments as well as in numerous other applications, both in nuclear instrumentation and in many other areas.
