1 Scope
1.1 These requirements cover glass-tube fuses intended for the protection of automotive wire andautomotive apparatus.
1.2 These requirements do not cover glass-tube fuses intended for use in circuits rated above 32 volts.1.3 A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or differentfrom those in use when the standard was developed and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injuryto persons shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirementsas determined necessary to maintain the level of safety for the user of the product as originally anticipatedby the intent of this standard.
2 Units of Measurement
2.1 Values stated without parentheses are the requirement.Values in parentheses are explanatory orapproximate information.
3 Components
3.1 Except as indicated in 3.2, a component of a value covered by this standard shall comply with therequirements for that component.
3.2 A component need not comply with a specific requirement that:
a) Involves a feature or characteristic not needed in the application of the component in thevalue covered by this standard, or
b) ls superseded by a requirement in this standard.
3.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for the intended conditions ofuse.
3.4 Specific components are incomplete in construction features or restricted in performance capabilities.Such components are intended for use only under limited conditions, such as certain temperatures notexceeding specified limits, and shall be used only under those specific conditions.
4 Undated References
4.1 Any undated reference to a code or standards appearing in the requirements of this standard shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.
cONSTRUGTION
5 Material
5.1 Fuse tubes shall be of clear glass.
5.2 Fuse caps shall be of brass or copper.Caps shall be plated with nickel, cadmium, or other materialhaving equivalent electrical and protective properties.
6 Assembly
6.1 Fuse caps shall be tightly attached to the glass tube, and the ends shall be square and free of excesssolder. The caps shall have an outside diameter of 0.25  0.003 inch (6.4 ±0.08 mm).
6.2 The fuses shall be capable of being passed through a tubular gauge at least as long as the fuse andhaving a uniform hole 0.258 inch (6.55 mm) in diameter.
6.3 Fuse dimensions shall be in accordance with Table 6.1 or may be 1-1/4 inch (31.8 mm) in length withthe dimensions specified for a 20 ampere rated fuse.
7 General
7.1 The following tests are to be conducted in an ambient temperature of 65 – 90°F (1 8.3 – 32.2°C), and with the fuses in the horizontal position.
7.2 Fuses subjected to the Carrying Capacity Test, Section 8, may be used for the Overload, Section 9, and Cycling Test, Section 1 0.
