UL 781:2009 free download Portable Electric Lighting Units for Use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations
1.1 These requirements cover portable electric lighting units for indoor use in hazardous (classified)locations, Class l, Division 1, Groups C and D, and Class ll, Division 1, Groups F and G, in accordancewith the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.
1.2These requirements also cover explosion-proof electrical equipment for use in Class l, Zone 1,Groups lIA,llB,and llC hazardous (classified) locations.
1.3 These requirements cover portable lighting units for use only under the following atmosphericconditions:
a) A minimum ambient temperature of minus 25°℃(minus 13°F);
b) An oxygen concentration not greater than 21 percent by volume; andc) A nominal barometric pressure of one atmosphere.
2 Units of Measurement
2.1 Values stated without parentheses are the requirement. Values in parentheses are explanatory orapproximate information.
3 Undated References
3.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this standard shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.
4 Components
4.1 Except as indicated in 4.2, a component of a product covered by this standard shall comply with therequirements for that component.
4.2 A component is not required to comply with a specific requirement that:
a) Involves a feature or characteristic not required in the application of the component in theproduct covered by this standard, or
b) ls superseded by a requirement in this standard.
4.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for the intended conditions ofuse.
4.4 Specific components are incomplete in construction features or restricted in performance capabilities.Such components are intended for use only under limited conditions,such as certain temperatures notexceeding specified limits,and shall be used only under those specific conditions.
5 General
5.1 A portable lighting unit shall also comply with the applicable requirements for a similar device for usein ordinary locations.
6 Enclosure Types
6.1 An enclosure suitable for Class l,Division 1 may be marked Type 7.
6.2 An enclosure suitable for Class ll,Division 1 may be marked Type 9.
6.3 An enclosure that is intended for use in other environmental conditions shall also comply with theapplicable requirements for each enclosure type, for example Type 3,4X, or 6, specified in the Standardfor Enclosures for Electrical Equipment, UL 50.
6.4 A Type 3,3R, 3S,4,4X,6,or 6P enclosure is not prohibited from being marked “Raintight”when nowater enters the enclosure or “Rainproof”when no water enters the enclosure at a point higher than thelowest live part.Compliance with these requirements shall be determined by the applicable tests in theStandard for Enclosures for Electrical Equipment, UL 50.
7 Class l,Zone, and Group Equivalency
7.1 Class l,Zone 1,Group lIA
7.1.1 Explosion-proof electrical equipment intended to be marked in accordance with 40.18 shall complywith all the requirements for explosion-proof electrical equipment for use in Class l,Group D hazardous(classified) locations.
7.2 Class l,Zone 1, Group llB
7.2.1 Explosion-proof electrical equipment intended to be marked in accordance with 40.19 shall complywith all the requirements for explosion-proof electrical equipment for use in Class l, Group C hazardous(classified) locations.
7.3 Class l, zone 1, Group llB plus Hydrogen
7.3.1 Explosion-proof electrical equipment intended to be marked in accordance with 40.20 shall complywith all the requirements for explosion-proof electrical equipment for use in Class l,Group B hazardous(classified) locations.
